The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation has launched a service for tokenised US securities on the Canton Network and a private Besu blockchain, CoinDesk reports. It currently covers 34 securities worth about $30 trillion, with 20 financial firms signed up for access.
Watch Desk analysis
What happened
The service lets eligible users mint tokenised representations of securities held at DTCC’s subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company. The securities include US stocks, exchange-traded funds and Treasuries. DTCC plans to add support for Stellar and Arc in 2027, according to CoinDesk’s report.
The participating firms named in the report include JPMorgan, Citi, Fidelity Investments, Citadel Securities, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America. The service aims to enable transfers around the clock and on-chain settlement. DTCC will keep official ownership records with the Depository Trust Company.
Why it matters
This is a move by a major US securities infrastructure provider to put representations of existing financial assets on blockchain networks. The stated aim is faster, round-the-clock transfer and settlement, while the official ownership record stays with DTCC’s existing subsidiary. That distinction matters: tokenising a security does not, on its own, mean the traditional record-keeping system has disappeared.
The service’s scale and list of participating institutions make this more than a blockchain demo looking for a use case. The open question is how much the new rails change the experience of transferring and settling securities in practice.
Our read
The interesting test is whether a familiar financial asset can move on new infrastructure without making ownership, access and oversight harder to understand. The launch gives institutions a route to try that. It does not yet tell us how widely the service will be used or whether round-the-clock transfers become routine.
What to watch
- Which firms begin using the service, and for what transactions.
- Whether DTCC adds the planned Stellar and Arc support in 2027.
- How on-chain transfers work alongside the official ownership records kept by the Depository Trust Company.
Discussion spark: Should securities be able to move on blockchain networks around the clock if official ownership records remain with traditional institutions, or does that preserve the old system’s limits?
