Fireworks AI has contracted 5MW of Nvidia Blackwell Ultra capacity at Era4’s data centre in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The deal gives the open-model AI company UK-based infrastructure for training and inference, with financial services, insurance and life sciences among its initial target sectors.

Fireworks AI Watch analysis

What happened

The agreement is for direct-liquid-cooled capacity powered by Nvidia Blackwell Ultra HGX B300 GPUs. Era4 says it owns and operates the Chesterfield infrastructure, which uses landfill gas for its main power supply and the grid for backup. Fireworks says the arrangement expands its UK capacity and gives customers another location in which to run models.

Data Center Dynamics reports that the capacity will support Fireworks’ model training and inference platform. The companies’ stated focus on regulated businesses makes the location itself part of the offer, not just a place to plug in more GPUs.

Why it matters

For businesses choosing where to run AI, the provider, hardware and workload matter. So can the location of the infrastructure. This agreement puts a specific amount of Nvidia-powered capacity at a named UK site, aimed in part at sectors where data location can influence a purchase.

It is a concrete addition to the UK’s AI-compute supply, though 5MW alone does not tell us how many customers will use it or what workloads it will handle. The announcement gives no price or deployment schedule, so the commercial scale beyond the contracted capacity remains unclear.

Our read

This is more than another grand plan for an AI campus: Fireworks has contracted a defined amount of capacity at an operating site. The interesting test will be whether the promised location choice translates into real deployments for regulated customers. Landfill gas is a notable detail, but it is not a substitute for figures on actual power use or emissions.

What to watch

  • When the contracted capacity becomes available to Fireworks and its customers.
  • Whether financial services, insurance or life sciences customers use the site.
  • What the companies disclose about deployment, utilisation and the service’s performance.

Discussion spark: For regulated businesses adopting AI, should the location of the computing infrastructure weigh as heavily as model performance and price?
