Five9 has agreed to buy Level AI for $325 million in cash, adding software that analyses customer-service calls and guides agents in real time. The deal also brings autonomous AI agents into Five9’s contact-centre business, with integration and the promise of reaching more customers still to come.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

Five9 announced the agreement as it reported its third-quarter results, SiliconANGLE reports. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter, subject to customary conditions.

Level AI’s software can analyse and score agent interactions, offer live guidance and support workflow automation. Its autonomous agents can handle some simpler customer enquiries and background tasks. Five9 says Level AI’s applications are already in production with enterprise customers and handle more than one billion interactions a year.

Five9 plans to integrate the tools with its Genius CX Platform, while continuing to offer them as standalone products, including to organisations using other contact-centre platforms.

Why it matters

This is a sizeable bet on AI for customer service, but not just a bet on replacing people with chatbots. The acquisition brings tools for assisting and coaching human agents alongside automation for simpler queries. Five9 says the combination will broaden the customers it can serve; the practical test is whether the software works well enough to make that promise useful beyond the deal announcement.

Our read

The interesting part is the mix of agent support, analysis and automation, plus Five9’s stated intention to keep Level AI available as a standalone product. That gives customers more than one possible route into the technology. But integration is where the value has to be earned, and a billion interactions handled each year is a company claim, not a measure of improved customer service.

What to watch

  • Whether the deal closes on the expected timetable.
  • How Five9 integrates Level AI into Genius CX while maintaining standalone access.
  • Whether customers adopt the tools and report meaningful improvements in service or agent performance.

Discussion spark: Should contact-centre AI be judged first by how many interactions it automates, or by whether it makes service better for customers and agents?
