Google and Singapore’s NHG Health plan to test an AI health coach from the first quarter of 2027, offering personalised lifestyle tips and screening reminders. The nine-month pilot will focus on people who have missed Healthier SG screenings and older people, testing whether AI can help bring preventive care to them earlier.

What happened

The Straits Times reports that the coach will be available through NHG Health’s WhatsApp chatbot. People will be able to use voice messages in Singapore’s four national languages. Suggested features include healthier meal ideas and nearby places to exercise, drawing on Google Maps.

NHG Health says the initial group could include a few thousand people, brought on board neighbourhood by neighbourhood. The service is also intended to offer virtual frailty assessments and guidance on diet and exercise for older users.

The coach will draw on a predictive model combining NHG Health population-health data with Google data on environmental and behavioural patterns. The model aims to forecast risks including chronic disease and frailty. The report also describes separate Google health initiatives announced at the same summit, including research and training programmes.

Why it matters

This is a concrete test of AI in preventive healthcare, not just another health chatbot answering questions on demand. The proposed service is meant to reach people who have missed screenings and offer guidance before problems become crises. That makes both the outreach and the way the predictive model is used important parts of the experiment.

For now, this is a planned proof of concept, not evidence that the coach improves health outcomes. NHG Health says it hopes to expand the service nationally through HealthHub if the pilot succeeds.

Our read

The practical promise is personal guidance delivered through a familiar channel, in languages people can speak rather than just type. The harder test is whether the system helps people take useful next steps, while steering clinically sensitive or urgent matters to appropriate care. A successful pilot should show more than a fluent conversation: it should show whether people are reached and whether care improves.

What to watch

  • Whether the pilot starts on schedule in early 2027, and how many people take part.
  • How the predictive model’s recommendations are assessed during the trial.
  • Whether NHG Health reports results on screening attendance, user experience and clinical safety.
  • Whether a successful pilot leads to the proposed HealthHub expansion.

Discussion spark: Should AI health coaches be used to proactively reach people who have missed screening, or should health systems wait for strong evidence of benefit before doing so?
