Google DeepMind’s Gemini 4 Carbon is being positioned for long-running engineering work, while Genie 4 can generate interactive virtual worlds that users steer as they unfold. The reported features are striking; the practical question is how much of this arrives beyond trusted testers.
Google DeepMind Watch analysis
What happened
Chrome Unboxed reports that Google DeepMind has introduced both systems. It says Carbon persisted for days on engineering tasks in internal testing, and reports Google’s benchmark figures of 59 on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 and 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro. Google is said to be making Carbon available first to cyber defenders and trusted partners through its Fairwind programme.
The report describes Genie 4 as a real-time world model that lets users change elements such as camera, weather and characters with natural-language prompts. It also says Genie generates audio alongside video, and is rolling out to trusted testers, with plans for access through Project Genie and Google AI Studio.
Why it matters
These are two different bets on AI that does more than answer a prompt: one tackles sustained software engineering, the other builds environments that can change on command. If the reported capabilities hold up outside internal tests, they could matter to developers, cyber defenders and people building interactive experiences.
Our read
The ambition is clear, but the evidence here is a report of Google’s claims, not independent testing. Carbon’s benchmark results and Genie’s demonstrations deserve attention; neither yet tells us how reliably these systems perform in everyday work. Impressive is a beginning, not a deployment plan.
What to watch
- Whether Carbon’s reported engineering and security results are reproduced outside Google’s tests.
- Which users gain access to Carbon after the initial trusted-partner rollout.
- When Genie 4 reaches Project Genie and Google AI Studio, and what users can actually build with it.
Discussion spark: Which would change your work more: an AI that can keep debugging a codebase for days, or one that lets you reshape a virtual world in real time?
