Google is reportedly narrowing which Gemini models subscribers can use, with changes due to take effect on 9 October. Free users would lose access to Flash and Pro, while Google AI Plus subscribers would lose Pro, making the $19.99-a-month AI Pro tier the reported price of keeping the same model access.

What happened

Mashable, citing a Google support notice spotted by 9to5Google, says free Gemini users will be limited to Flash-Lite. People paying $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus would retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro. The report says AI Pro subscribers will gain access to the Deep Think option, previously reserved for a higher tier. Read Mashable’s report.

Why it matters

This is a practical change to what users get for their money, not merely a new name on a pricing page. Anyone relying on Pro through a free or lower-cost account may need to change plans, change models or rethink whether the feature is worth paying to keep.

The report gives the effective date and tiers, but the underlying support notice is the source of the detail. Check Google’s current plan information before making a subscription decision; prices and access can vary by market.

Our read

If the reported details hold, this is a meaningful reshuffle: some users lose access, while AI Pro gains Deep Think. Google is drawing a clearer line between trying Gemini and paying for its more capable options. The line may be clear on the pricing page; it will feel rather less abstract to anyone who finds Pro has vanished from their usual account.

What to watch

  • Whether Google confirms the changes and their availability by market.
  • Which models each plan actually includes from 9 October.
  • Whether Deep Think becomes a meaningful draw for AI Pro subscribers.

Discussion spark: If Google moves Gemini Pro access to a $19.99-a-month plan, is the added Deep Think access enough to justify the higher price, or should a capable model remain available on lower tiers?
