Hankuk University of Foreign Studies plans to open a third campus in Songdo in 2027, with a strategy that pairs its language and regional expertise with AI research and industry partnerships. The university’s president says the aim is to connect international talent with industries, not to turn every student into a programmer.

What happened

In an interview with The Korea Herald, HUFS president Kang Kee-hoon described Songdo as an international education base and a new campus for students who have yet to choose a major. Students would generally spend their first year studying Korean and exploring different subjects, with the option to continue that exploration into a second year before choosing a major at the university’s Seoul or Yongin campus.

Kang also outlined a wider plan to combine the university’s language and area-studies strengths with AI and data in education, research and administration. HUFS has signed agreements with Naver Cloud and LG CNS as part of efforts to develop AI talent and a smart campus. Kang said LG CNS had expressed interest in people who combine local knowledge with AI capabilities.

Why it matters

The plan makes a useful case for a less fashionable but more grounded AI skill: knowing enough about language, history and place to ask worthwhile questions of the technology. It also puts a university’s proposed AI direction alongside practical changes to campus life, research funding and links with employers.

The article describes strategy and plans, not evidence that the new campus or partnerships have already delivered results. HUFS says it introduced support this year for 11 international joint-research projects, across humanities, social sciences, science and engineering, and is discussing expanded degree arrangements with overseas universities.

Our read

“AI skills” need not mean everyone learns to code. HUFS is making a more distinctive argument: technical tools may be more useful when joined to deep knowledge of languages and societies. The test will be whether that mix produces stronger teaching, research and career routes, rather than merely giving familiar university ambitions a shinier label.

What to watch

  • Whether the Songdo campus opens as planned in 2027, and how its exploratory first-year programme works in practice.
  • What the Naver Cloud and LG CNS agreements produce beyond stated cooperation.
  • Whether international research support leads to sustained joint projects and published work.

Discussion spark: Should universities treat AI as a core skill for every student, or prioritise pairing it with deep expertise in particular subjects?
