India’s AI data-centre boom could demand a vast new clean-power buildout

India’s data-centre expansion is creating a major new demand for renewable power, with one industry leader estimating that 5 gigawatts of data-centre capacity could require 30–40 gigawatts of renewable generation. The scale matters: supplying a single 1-gigawatt AI data centre with 75% renewables could require billions of dollars in new generation and storage investment.

What happened

The Economic Times reports that Indian renewable-energy suppliers are preparing for increased demand from data centres, as operators look to markets including India. CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions founder and managing director Kuldeep Jain said that even 5GW of data-centre capacity would require about 30–40GW of renewable power. He described that figure as a conservative estimate.

Jain’s example for a 1GW AI data centre supplied with 75% renewables calls for roughly 3GW each of solar and wind capacity, plus 3 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. He estimated the renewable-side capital expenditure at about 40,000 crore rupees, or $4.8 billion. Those are his estimates, not a settled bill for any particular project.

Why it matters

The figures show why AI infrastructure is also an energy and investment story. Data centres need dependable electricity, while renewable supply varies; pairing wind and solar with storage could require substantial new capacity before a server ever gets to work. Jain says the green energy needed for AI infrastructure is underappreciated.

The reported pipeline is already sizeable: 1.3GW of data-centre IT capacity is under construction in India, with another 3.2GW of projects said to have secured land, power and permits. Wood Mackenzie expects total capacity to reach 12GW by 2030, including 6.5GW of AI-specific capacity. These are reported projections, not completed buildout.

Our read

This is a useful corrective to the idea that AI infrastructure is simply a matter of ordering more servers. The power system has to grow alongside it, and the costs are large enough to shape where projects land and how their electricity is contracted. The key question is whether renewable generation and storage can arrive at the pace promised by data-centre plans. The spreadsheet, at least, has noticed the boom.

What to watch

  • Whether India’s announced data-centre projects reach construction and operation on schedule.
  • How much renewable generation and storage is built to serve new facilities.
  • Whether data-centre operators favour physical electricity supply or flexible renewable-energy contracts.

Discussion spark: Should AI data-centre developers be required to fund enough new renewable generation and storage to match their demand, or should the wider grid carry that cost?
