Instagram has brought its Edits video editor to macOS, where creators can connect an AI agent to editing tools through an MCP interface. The new desktop app also adds a multi-track timeline and watermark-free 4K exports, giving creators a more capable editing workspace and a choice about where AI fits in it.

Meta AI Watch analysis

What happened

Meta’s Matthew Simari, who leads product management for Edits, told The Verge that creators can use Muse or another agent to work with the desktop app. In his example, an agent could make a rough cut from video files in a downloads folder; the creator could then open the project in Edits and carry on editing manually. The app also supports a full multi-track timeline, audio waveforms, colour grading, keyboard shortcuts, multiple aspect ratios, Instagram’s audio library and direct publishing to Instagram.

The launch is currently for macOS only. Projects cannot yet be edited across mobile and desktop, although Meta says it is working on cross-platform editing and plans weekly updates. The Verge’s report on Edits for desktop also says the app can export watermark-free 4K video.

Why it matters

The notable change is not simply that an AI feature has appeared in a video editor. Edits exposes its tools to agents, so creators can hand over a bounded task, such as assembling a rough cut, then return to the timeline themselves. That is a practical experiment in agent-assisted creative work, with the human still able to take the project back.

For creators, the desktop launch also brings familiar editing tools to a larger screen. But the first version has clear boundaries: it is Mac-only, and a project cannot yet travel seamlessly between desktop and mobile. The agent may get the first assembly job; the platform-switching chores remain on the human’s list.

Our read

This is a more concrete pitch for creative AI than another button promising to “make content”. Edits gives outside agents access to editing tools, while keeping manual editing in the same workflow. Whether that feels like useful assistance or an invitation to let software rummage through your video folder will depend on the controls, reliability and results. For now, the desktop launch is promising, but not a reason for Windows or mobile-first creators to start rearranging their workflow.

What to watch

  • Whether Meta opens the desktop app beyond macOS.
  • When cross-platform project editing arrives.
  • Which agents creators can connect, and what access and controls the MCP interface provides.
  • Whether weekly updates improve the editor without making agent-assisted work harder to manage.

Discussion spark: Would you let an AI agent make the first cut of your footage if you could take over in the same editor, or is that too much access to hand over?
