MediaTek expects its AI accelerator chips to bring in about US$16 billion in 2027, as the Taiwanese chipmaker targets roughly a fifth of that market. The forecast gives a concrete measure of how established chip designers are positioning themselves to cash in on AI infrastructure demand.

What happened

MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai told an investors conference that the company began shipping its first ASIC for AI accelerators in September. He expects strong demand to generate about US$2.5 billion in sales from the chip in the fourth quarter of 2026, then about US$16 billion next year. That would put MediaTek at around 20% of the global market for ASICs used in AI accelerators, according to Focus Taiwan’s report.

Tsai also said MediaTek’s next ASIC, designed for a later generation of AI infrastructure, is scheduled to enter commercial production in the first quarter of 2028. He said it should deliver several-fold higher efficiency per watt and sharply lower total costs. Those are company expectations, not independently established performance results.

Why it matters

The figures make MediaTek’s AI ambitions more tangible than a promise to “participate” in a booming market: the company says its first accelerator chip is already shipping, and has laid out a large revenue target for next year. If achieved, that would make AI infrastructure a significant business for a chip designer better known to many people for mobile devices.

The projection is still a forecast, and the 2028 chip’s efficiency claims have yet to be demonstrated in the supplied report. But investors and chip buyers now have clear milestones to compare with what MediaTek actually delivers.

Our read

This is a sizeable bet, backed by a product that MediaTek says is already shipping. The US$16 billion target deserves attention, but it is not revenue in the bank. The interesting test is whether the company can turn early shipments into repeat demand, then make its next-generation efficiency claims count outside the conference room.

What to watch

  • Whether fourth-quarter AI accelerator sales approach the US$2.5 billion forecast.
  • How MediaTek’s reported AI ASIC revenue develops through 2027.
  • Whether the next chip enters commercial production on schedule in early 2028.
  • Evidence for the promised efficiency and cost improvements.

Discussion spark: If MediaTek reaches its 2027 target, will that show a durable shift in AI chipmaking, or mainly the strength of a short-lived infrastructure boom?
