Meta is expanding Forum, its app for Facebook Groups, with an AI feature that surfaces relevant posts and comments in response to questions. The app is available in the US on iOS and Android, giving group members another way to find advice and discover communities.
Meta AI Watch analysis
What happened
Forum brings Facebook groups together in a separate app, where users can browse their groups and find new ones. Meta says its Ask feature uses AI to highlight existing posts and comments, including from groups users belong to and public groups they have not joined. Users can jump from an answer into the discussion it came from.
Meta is testing two additions to Ask: recommendations that compare options, and suggested questions based on recent searches. The company is also testing topic labels to help users browse related conversations, and a new role for community contributors. Group admins can grant the role; it comes with a badge and benefits including faster post publication. Meta says members can remove themselves from the role.
The details are in Meta’s announcement.
Why it matters
Ask is not presented as a new source of answers: it points people towards conversations already happening in groups. That could make years of practical advice easier to find, while giving Meta’s AI a prominent role in deciding which voices and posts users encounter. The feature is being tested, so its usefulness will depend on the relevance of the results and how clearly users can follow them back to their source.
Our read
There is a sensible idea here: help people find firsthand experience without making them search a group’s entire history by hand. The important distinction is that Ask highlights existing posts and comments, rather than promising that an AI-generated answer can replace the people who wrote them. Meta should make the route from summary to original discussion easy to follow. Nobody needs a confident paraphrase when the useful detail is two taps away.
What to watch
- How widely Meta rolls out Ask and its comparison and follow-up suggestions.
- Whether results reliably surface relevant posts from both joined and public groups.
- How the contributor role’s faster publication benefit works alongside Community Standards.
- Whether topic labels help people find useful discussions beyond their existing groups.
Discussion spark: If an AI feature surfaces advice from group discussions, should it prioritise the most relevant posts or the most helpful and reliable contributors?
