Meta has detailed new networking hardware and software for its AI infrastructure at the 2026 OCP Global Summit, including a liquid-cooled switch rack and an open-source transport project. The announcements show how building large AI clusters is becoming a networking challenge as much as a matter of adding accelerators.

What happened

In a Meta Engineering post published on 26 October, the company described several systems supporting its AI models and Prometheus cluster. It also said the summit talks and slide decks are now available.

Among the developments Meta highlighted:

Our top picks

  • IcePack and IceCube
Meta’s first liquid-cooled network rack pairs with 102.4-terabit switching and 128 800-gigabit Ethernet connections.
  • Flattened Planar Fabric
Meta’s scale-out design connects each GPU to eight network planes, with a two-tier Clos network and NIC-level packet spraying.
  • Backend Aggregation
The petabit-scale super-spine links buildings, campuses and regions across the Prometheus cluster.
  • Open Switch Platform Architecture
Meta says it co-led the OCP initiative with Microsoft and Alibaba, and submitted its version 1.0 specification.
  • MetaRoCE
Meta says it is open-sourcing a user-space implementation of its RDMA transport, with a DPDK-based version to come.
  • Tahan
The Ethernet scale-up switch is designed for Meta’s MTIA 300 AI system.

Why it matters

These are infrastructure choices with practical consequences: how AI systems move data between accelerators, how much power and cooling their networks need, and whether different vendors can build compatible equipment. Meta’s proposals for open switch platforms and an open transport implementation could help reduce dependence on proprietary networking stacks, though the announcements alone do not establish how widely other operators will adopt them.

The useful signal is the breadth of the work. Meta is addressing connections within a rack, between machines and across sites, rather than treating the network as a cable run that can be sorted out later. At gigawatt scale, that would be an optimistic way to meet a switch.

Our read

Meta is making a substantial case for open, full-stack AI networking, backed by specific hardware and software projects rather than a general call for openness. The details are worth following, especially where specifications and code become usable beyond Meta’s own systems. This is the company’s account of its work, not independent evidence of performance in other operators’ deployments.

What to watch

  • Whether the OSPA specification attracts implementation from other switch vendors.
  • When MetaRoCE’s planned DPDK-based version becomes available.
  • How Meta’s liquid-cooled racks and scale-across networking perform as Prometheus expands.

Discussion spark: For AI infrastructure, should operators favour open networking standards that widen their choice of suppliers, or tighter vendor integration that may be easier to deploy at scale?
