Deleting an AI chat on your phone may not remove every trace: Georgia Tech researchers’ forensic tool ORISA recovered conversation data from tests across Android apps and AI models. The finding matters for anyone who assumes that an on-device conversation disappears when its chat window does.

What happened

Digital Trends reports that ORISA searches a copy of a phone’s memory and storage for leftover data, then reconstructs recovered fragments into a chatbot session. In one test, researchers gave a fictional assistant 100 facts and deleted the conversation. Although the live session could access 14 facts at deletion, ORISA recovered 26. That was a partial recovery, not the full original conversation.

Across 60 test configurations covering 10 Android apps and three AI models, the tool recovered deleted conversation data. The report says recovery becomes harder when other activity overwrites the relevant data. ORISA is a forensic tool for investigators, not a consumer app for restoring old chats.

Why it matters

On-device AI can keep conversations off the cloud, but local storage is still storage. A delete button may remove a conversation from the app’s interface without immediately wiping every trace from the phone. That has potential value for investigators, and an awkward privacy implication for people who treat deletion as a clean break.

Our read

This is a meaningful research warning, not proof that every deleted chat can be recovered or that the tool works equally well on every device. Still, “local” and “gone” are plainly not synonyms. If a conversation is sensitive, do not assume the app’s delete control is a secure erase.

What to watch

  • Whether the researchers publish further detail on the apps and models tested.
  • Whether AI app makers explain how deletion affects data stored on a device.
  • Whether device and app settings offer users a clear way to erase local data.

Discussion spark: Should AI apps have to tell users plainly that deleting a chat may not erase its traces from a phone, even when the conversation stays on-device?
