Qualcomm has showcased two next-generation Snapdragon flagship mobile chips at India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, with AI features among their headline pitches. The preview also puts three upcoming phones, including Xiaomi’s 18 Pro, on the new platforms, giving the chip announcement a more tangible destination than a slide deck alone.

What happened
Fossbytes reports that Qualcomm showed the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Qualcomm describes the Extreme model’s agentic AI features as able to detect users’ needs, suggest actions and perform tasks with less manual effort. The report does not give independent tests or detailed examples of those tasks.
The chips are also presented as supporting changes across gaming, imaging and connectivity. The standard Gen 6 is described as sharing some Extreme-edition technologies, including a 2 nm process, a customised Oryon CPU, a new Adreno GPU and a Hexagon NPU. Qualcomm also previewed the iQOO 16, Motorola Signature 27 and Xiaomi 18 Pro as forthcoming phones using its platforms.
Why it matters
The useful question is not whether a chip can wear the word “agentic” on its badge. It is what the phone can reliably do for its owner, and how much work happens on-device. Qualcomm’s description suggests a move from answering prompts towards taking actions, but the report supplies no demonstrations, performance figures or release dates to judge how far that promise goes.
For phone buyers, the preview offers an early indication of which premium devices may carry the new silicon. The listed hardware changes are concrete; the everyday AI payoff remains a claim to test against real software and real use.
Our read
This is worth more than a passing chip-watch note: Qualcomm has previewed two flagship platforms and named three phone lines due to use them. But “agentic” is still the enticing label on the tin, not proof of a capable assistant. When those phones arrive, show us the task, the result and whether it ran locally. The marketing can wait its turn.
What to watch
- Whether Qualcomm publishes demonstrations or technical detail for the described AI tasks.
- Which features reach each of the three named phones, and when they go on sale.
- How the chips perform in real devices across AI, power use, cameras and connectivity.
Discussion spark: Should phone makers prioritise assistants that take actions for you, or keep AI limited to answering when asked?
