Anthropic reported a net loss of $42bn in 2025 and plans $518bn in cloud, computing and infrastructure spending obligations over the coming year, according to Reuters’ account of the company’s IPO prospectus. The figures put the scale of the AI build-out, and the financial bet behind it, squarely in view.

Anthropic Watch analysis

What happened

Reuters reported the figures on 28 September, citing Anthropic’s IPO prospectus. Its headline describes the $518bn as planned spending on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in the coming year; it does not break down those obligations or explain how the total is calculated.

The same report says Anthropic recorded a $42bn net loss in 2025. These are figures attributed to the prospectus through Reuters, not a detailed account of the company’s financial position or a guarantee that every planned obligation will become spending.

Why it matters

AI progress is often discussed in models and benchmarks. These figures put the less glamorous side of the race on the page: huge infrastructure commitments alongside a huge reported loss. The balance between future growth and the cost of securing enough computing capacity will matter to investors, customers and anyone watching how the industry is financed.

Our read

This is a major financial signal, not proof that Anthropic’s strategy will succeed or fail. The reported totals deserve attention, but their meaning depends on details such as the obligations’ scope, timing and terms. Those are the questions to keep asking when AI’s spending forecasts arrive with several zeroes and very little room for casual interpretation.

What to watch

  • How the prospectus defines and breaks down the $518bn in planned obligations.
  • Whether Anthropic’s later disclosures clarify the timing and conditions attached to that total.
  • How the company’s reported loss and infrastructure commitments change as it pursues an IPO.

Discussion spark: When an AI company takes on infrastructure obligations on this scale, should investors judge it mainly by the computing capacity it secures or by whether the spending can produce a credible path to profitability?

Update

What changed

Anthropic spent $7.33bn on computing and infrastructure in 2025, more than half of its $12.65bn in operating expenses, according to figures attributed to its IPO prospectus. That puts a concrete price tag on the computing capacity behind its AI work, rather than leaving the infrastructure bill as a distant forecast.

National Technology News says Reuters’ account of the prospectus records nearly $4.6bn in 2025 revenue, up twelvefold from 2024. The publication says this appears to conflict with Anthropic’s May statement that it generated $10bn in revenue in 2025. That comparison needs clarification before the figures can be treated as directly comparable.

The new detail makes the financial picture more specific: steep infrastructure costs sit alongside rapid reported revenue growth, while the earlier revenue figure remains unresolved.
