Anthropic reported a net loss of $42bn in 2025 and plans $518bn in cloud, computing and infrastructure spending obligations over the coming year, according to Reuters’ account of the company’s IPO prospectus. The figures put the scale of the AI build-out, and the financial bet behind it, squarely in view.

Anthropic Watch analysis

What happened

Reuters reported the figures on 28 September, citing Anthropic’s IPO prospectus. Its headline describes the $518bn as planned spending on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in the coming year; it does not break down those obligations or explain how the total is calculated.

The same report says Anthropic recorded a $42bn net loss in 2025. These are figures attributed to the prospectus through Reuters, not a detailed account of the company’s financial position or a guarantee that every planned obligation will become spending.

Why it matters

AI progress is often discussed in models and benchmarks. These figures put the less glamorous side of the race on the page: huge infrastructure commitments alongside a huge reported loss. The balance between future growth and the cost of securing enough computing capacity will matter to investors, customers and anyone watching how the industry is financed.

Our read

This is a major financial signal, not proof that Anthropic’s strategy will succeed or fail. The reported totals deserve attention, but their meaning depends on details such as the obligations’ scope, timing and terms. Those are the questions to keep asking when AI’s spending forecasts arrive with several zeroes and very little room for casual interpretation.

What to watch

  • How the prospectus defines and breaks down the $518bn in planned obligations.
  • Whether Anthropic’s later disclosures clarify the timing and conditions attached to that total.
  • How the company’s reported loss and infrastructure commitments change as it pursues an IPO.

Discussion spark: When an AI company takes on infrastructure obligations on this scale, should investors judge it mainly by the computing capacity it secures or by whether the spending can produce a credible path to profitability?

Update

What changed

Reuters now reports that Anthropic expects to spend at least $518bn on AI infrastructure over ten years, working with six partners. That is a very different timescale from the coming-year framing in the existing story.

The new report says about 80% of the commitment is non-cancellable or payable regardless of usage. In other words, much of the bill may remain due even if Anthropic uses less of the contracted capacity.

That detail shifts the story from a near-term spending forecast to a vast, long-dated infrastructure commitment with substantial fixed exposure. Reuters attributes the figures to Anthropic’s IPO prospectus.
