OpenAI has announced Dots, always-on AI assistants designed to carry out tasks across connected apps in the background. Their reach is the headline: The Verge says they can access more than 4,000 supported apps through their own cloud computer.

OpenAI Watch analysis

What happened

OpenAI announced Dots at its DevDay keynote, according to The Verge. The assistants are powered by GPT-6 Astra and can use a web browser and connected apps while learning users’ preferences over time.

People can interact with a Dot through a text-style interface or a voice call in ChatGPT on the web, desktop or mobile. The Verge describes them as OpenAI’s answer to Meta’s Muse, another assistant pitching help across apps and ongoing tasks.

Why it matters

Dots push ChatGPT beyond answering a prompt towards doing work in the background across a broad range of services. That could make multi-step tasks more convenient, but it also raises a practical question: how much access should an assistant need to be useful?

Our read

The breadth of the app connections is more consequential than the customisable avatars. OpenAI is pitching an assistant that can keep working after the conversation moves on; the proof will be whether people can understand and control what it does along the way.

What to watch

  • Which apps Dots can access at launch, and whether availability varies by platform or account.
  • What permissions users can grant, limit or revoke.
  • How OpenAI explains background actions and user control. The useful change is who has to alter a product, a budget or a public line if the account holds.

Discussion spark: Would you let an always-on AI agent work across thousands of connected apps, or should it need your approval for each task?

Update

What changed

ZDNet reports that conversations with a Dot do not count towards ChatGPT usage limits, but tasks it starts or manages in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. That makes the allowance distinction important for anyone considering leaving an agent to work in the background.

The report says Dots’ proactive research uses connected apps in read-only mode: it can gather information, but cannot send messages or change app content through those tools. OpenAI has not said how much usage that background research will consume.

ZDNet also says users can give Dots access to their laptop, but doing so reduces some of the isolation provided by its dedicated cloud computer. The practical trade-off is clearer than the meter: more access may make an agent more useful, while the cost of its background work remains unspecified.
