Cohere has announced the initial close of a Series E funding round targeting up to CAD $7 billion, at a stated valuation of CAD $35.7 billion. The company says the money will support its models, enterprise AI products and long-term computing infrastructure, as the race to build sovereign AI gets a very large new price tag.

Cohere Watch analysis

What happened

Cohere’s announcement names the companies of Schwarz Group as lead investor and says commitments include new institutional and strategic investors, among them Bell Ventures, Bullhound Capital and the Government of Canada. NVIDIA and Prosperity7 Ventures are returning investors. The target is up to CAD $7 billion, not a claim that the full amount has already been raised.

Cohere says it plans to use the funding to advance its modelling and product roadmap, develop AI solutions for regulated industries and invest in compute infrastructure. It also says its North platform ended the third quarter of 2026 with 165% year-on-year annual recurring revenue growth, and that its customer base grew to 300. Those are company figures, not independently established measures of future performance.

Why it matters

The round puts a concrete number on investor appetite for an AI company selling control over where models run and how organisations handle their data. Cohere says the investment will support deployments across cloud, private infrastructure, on-premises and air-gapped environments, all relevant to customers with demanding data and governance requirements.

Canada’s government is also making an equity investment, which Cohere says will support Canadian jobs and computing infrastructure while giving Canadians a stake in the company. That makes this more than a private funding milestone: it is also a bet on whether public investment can help a domestic AI firm scale without moving its centre of gravity elsewhere.

Our read

The headline figure is eye-catching; the useful test is what it buys. Cohere is promising more models, products and infrastructure for regulated customers, while investors are backing the company at a valuation of CAD $35.7 billion. Those are related claims, but not the same thing as proof that the spending will produce durable growth or broad adoption. Sovereignty is a compelling pitch; customers will still want capable products, sensible costs and the freedom to choose where their data goes.

What to watch

  • Whether Cohere reaches the full CAD $7 billion target, and what final terms are disclosed.
  • How much of the funding goes towards compute, models and customer-facing products.
  • Whether the company’s reported customer and revenue growth translates into sustained adoption.

Discussion spark: Should governments take equity stakes in domestic AI companies to build sovereign capacity, or should public money support shared infrastructure instead?

Update

What changed

Cohere says it intends to expand across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. The company’s stated plans give the funding round a wider geographic reach, though the announcement does not specify a timetable for that expansion.

The company also lists product releases from this year: Command A+, Cohere Transcribe, Parse 5, Embed 5, Rerank 5, North Mini Code and North Small Translate. They span generation, speech, document processing, search, coding and translation, broadening the reported roadmap beyond a general promise to build models and enterprise products.

Cohere says its expansion this year included transactions involving Aleph Alpha, Reliant AI and AISLE, adding capabilities in sovereign AI, healthcare and life sciences, and cybersecurity.
