SAP is extending Joule agents with a governed gateway for connecting to other agents and business systems, alongside new AI models for structured data. The practical shift is towards agents that can act across enterprise workflows while keeping access controlled, and models that can analyse business tables rather than only language.

What happened

SAP announced the changes at its annual TechEd conference, according to SiliconANGLE. Joule Work will use Model Context Protocol and Agent2Agent to gather context, make decisions and carry out multistep workflows. A new orchestration layer is intended to let assistants and agents invoke Joule Agents through a governed gateway. SAP also recently added the ability for agents to trigger n8n workflows, which can keep exact, repeatable steps for sensitive or regulated tasks rather than handing every decision to a generative model.

The company also announced SAP-RPT-2.0, a tabular AI model that adds anomaly and outlier detection to classification and regression, and SAP-RPT-TS for forecasting values across time-indexed metrics. SAP says the models are intended to reduce manual engineering and make analysis available to less technical users. In a partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, it plans to deploy SAP-RPT on the International Space Station to analyse sensor data without first sending it back to Earth.

Why it matters

Enterprise agents need more than permission to act. They need relevant business context, defined access and a way to perform routine tasks predictably. SAP’s mix of agentic decision-making and fixed workflow steps gives organisations a choice between flexibility and repeatability, instead of pretending every task benefits from an agent improvising.

The tabular models address another practical gap: much business information lives in rows and columns, not chat. The planned space-station deployment is a distinctive test case, though an announced deployment is not yet evidence of operational results.

Our read

There is substance here beyond the familiar promise that software will become more autonomous. The governed gateway and n8n connection speak to how agents might be constrained in real workflows, while the new models target structured data directly. SAP has described the capabilities and intended uses, but the operational results remain to be demonstrated. The sensible test is whether customers can use them to solve specific tasks without trading control for convenience.

What to watch

  • How SAP’s governed gateway handles agents from other providers and their permissions.
  • Which tasks customers actually run through n8n, and where fixed workflows remain necessary.
  • Whether SAP publishes evaluation results for the new tabular models and the planned ISS deployment.

Discussion spark: For enterprise AI agents, which should come first: flexible autonomy across business systems, or tightly prescribed workflows that are easier to control?
