SAP is expanding its Joule AI offering with Joule Work, a new workspace for acting across business systems, and Joule Studio tools for building and managing custom agents. The changes bring AI closer to everyday enterprise tasks, while leaving companies to decide how much work to hand over to agents.

SAP Watch analysis

What happened

SAP says 45,000 cloud customers now use its AI solutions. Its Q3 highlights describe Joule Work as available on desktop, in apps, on the web and on mobile, with availability beginning in phases. The workspace can work with local files in a secure sandbox, use web search and connect to SAP and non-SAP applications through MCP tools and agent-to-agent integrations.

Joule Studio offers agent and skill builders. The agent builder supports multi-step processes across SAP and non-SAP systems; the skill builder is for reusable, more predictable operations. SAP says teams can test, version and deploy custom agents, with governance and visibility into execution. The agent builder is free until December 2026, after which it becomes a premium AI feature; the skill builder is a base AI feature. The Q3 release highlights also describe specialised assistants and agents for areas including billing, supply chains and product design.

Why it matters

This is a push beyond a single chatbot window: Joule is being positioned as a layer that can connect business context, tools and multi-step workflows. For customers, the practical appeal is less time switching between systems and more scope to automate repetitive work. The trade-off is that agent access, testing and oversight become operational questions, not optional fine print.

SAP cites customer examples and estimated productivity gains, but those are company-reported results rather than independent evaluations. They are useful signals of intended use, not a guarantee that every deployment will deliver the same savings.

Our read

The interesting shift is the combination of a workspace for using AI with tools to build and govern what the AI can do. That could make Joule more useful than a conversational front end alone. The price change for the agent builder also gives customers a clear deadline to assess the tool before it becomes a premium feature. As ever, the demo is the easy part; reliable performance inside a company’s real processes is the test.

What to watch

  • How quickly Joule Work and Joule Studio move through phased availability.
  • What the agent builder will cost after December 2026.
  • Whether customers publish results that show how the tools perform beyond SAP’s own examples.

Discussion spark: Should enterprise AI agents be allowed to act across business systems by default, or should each new capability require explicit human approval?
