Siri, Alexa+ and Gemini are coming to the telly, but they do not listen alike

TV assistants are becoming more useful for finding programmes and controlling playback, but Siri, Alexa+ and Gemini come with different device requirements and privacy trade-offs. For viewers, the best choice may be less about which assistant sounds cleverest and more about what is already in the living room.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

Pocket-lint compares the three assistants across discovery, playback controls, listening and cost. Alexa+ is free on compatible Fire TV devices, while Gemini comes with Google TV Streamer. Siri AI is available on Apple TV 4K models from the second generation onwards, with some features arriving as a tvOS 27.2 upgrade.

The controls vary considerably. Alexa+ can jump to a described scene within Prime Video, while Gemini on the Streamer requires the remote’s microphone button. The new Apple TV 4K has far-field microphones for hands-free use; older compatible models still require a button press. Read Pocket-lint’s comparison.

Why it matters

These differences affect more than convenience. Apple’s new box starts at $299, while the Google TV Streamer is listed at $149.99. Siri AI also depends on an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone or iPad in the Home app for some personal-context features, which makes an all-Android household an awkward fit.

Listening and account settings differ too. The comparison says the Streamer only listens after the remote button is pressed; hands-free Fire TV devices use a wake word, and Alexa recordings can be managed in the Alexa app. Apple says audio on the new box is handled in Secure Exclaves, but the article notes it does not explain whether the microphones can be switched off. Convenient is lovely. Knowing when a device is listening is lovelier.

Our read

This is a useful reminder that “AI on your TV” is not one interchangeable feature. Check whether your device supports the assistant, how you start a request and what gets saved before buying a new box for the promise of a better search bar.

Pocket-lint also reports that Gemini invented a scene while answering a question about a film. Treat its trivia as a starting point, not the director’s cut.

What to watch

  • Whether Apple explains how to disable the new TV microphones.
  • Which Fire TV models receive Alexa+ and when the rollout reaches them.
  • Whether Siri AI’s server-side features bring usage caps or paid access.
  • Whether Gemini’s film answers become more reliable.

Discussion spark: Would you choose a TV assistant for its hands-free convenience, or avoid one that listens for a wake word?
