SoftBank is reportedly seeking up to $100bn from Gulf investors to expand its AI investments, including through a proposed fund that could buy companies and use AI and robotics to improve their operations. The plan would deepen the Japanese group’s already large technology push, but remains at the early-talks stage.

What happened

The AI Insider says the Financial Times reported that SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son had held preliminary discussions with potential backers, including investors in the United Arab Emirates. The proposed fund could acquire companies and use AI and machines, including technology from SoftBank’s robotics arm Roze, in their operations.

The report says a SoftBank representative declined to comment. It also places the proposed fund alongside SoftBank’s almost $65bn investment in OpenAI. That is useful context for the scale of the company’s AI ambitions, not confirmation that a new fund or any investment has been agreed.

Why it matters

If pursued, a fund of this size would give SoftBank another route to steer capital into AI and robotics businesses, and potentially to change how the companies it buys operate. The interesting proposition is not simply another very large pot of money: it is the plan to pair investment with deploying technology across acquired businesses.

For now, the key detail is the distinction between early fundraising discussions and committed capital. The report describes a proposal, not a closed fund, completed acquisition or confirmed deployment of robotics systems.

Our read

SoftBank has never been shy about thinking big. The ambition here is striking, but the operational idea is the part to watch: whether AI and robotics become a repeatable way to improve acquired companies, rather than an impressive line in a fundraising pitch.

What to watch

  • Whether SoftBank or potential investors confirm the proposed fund or its terms.
  • How much capital, if any, is committed and when it could be available.
  • Which companies or operational uses the fund would target.

Discussion spark: If SoftBank raises a fund on this scale, should it focus on backing AI and robotics companies, or on deploying those technologies across businesses it acquires?
