Tata Communications plans to invest ₹4,350 crore in about 10,000 km of AI-ready connectivity across India, adding capacity between data centres and AI hubs. The proposed build would add around 6 petabits per second to its existing network, giving AI infrastructure a less glamorous but rather essential ingredient: the ability to move data.

What happened

The Economic Times reports that the company announced the investment on 26 October. The build is planned in three phases between FY30 and FY36, funded through operating cash flows. Its first phase will focus on the Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad–Chennai corridor; later phases are planned for data-centre clusters in eastern and western India, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and GIFT City.

The new capacity would sit alongside Tata Communications’ existing 1.25 Pbps network, which the company says is currently used at around 70–80%. The planned network is also intended to connect data-centre clusters with international cable landing stations and the company’s global backbone.

Why it matters

AI systems need computing power, but they also need fast, resilient links between the places where data is stored and processed. Tata Communications is betting that growing demand from cloud providers, AI platforms and enterprises will make those links a substantial business. Its chief executive said the Indian data-centre connectivity market could exceed $1 billion over the medium term.

For customers, the practical promise is more capacity between major data-centre corridors and international networks. The project is a plan, not a completed network, and the first phase is still years away. Those are important distinctions when the headline number comes with a long timetable.

Our read

This is a consequential infrastructure bet, not another model launch. If delivered, the extra capacity could help connect India’s expanding AI and cloud facilities to one another and to global markets. The useful test is whether the phased build turns into available, dependable connectivity, rather than remaining a very large number on a very long map.

What to watch

  • Progress on the first Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad–Chennai phase.
  • Whether contracted customer demand supports the planned investment.
  • How much of the promised 6 Pbps of capacity becomes available, and when.
  • Whether later phases reach the named data-centre clusters on schedule.

Discussion spark: Should India prioritise building AI infrastructure links ahead of confirmed demand, or wait for customers to commit before investing at this scale?
