Two Kenyan AI startups have won a combined KSh 1.3 million in equity-free funding at Meta AI Academy Kenya’s inaugural pitchathon. Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma also receive advertising credits and an invitation to present their products at Meta’s regional AI summit in November.

What happened

The competition, organised by Meta with This Is Digital, drew more than 426 applications, according to Tech In Africa. Ten finalists presented products spanning areas including healthcare, education, finance, retail and legal technology.

Neural Labs Africa won for NeuralSight, an AI-assisted tele-radiology platform intended to connect healthcare facilities with remote medical specialists, including where internet access is limited. Me-Nasoma’s platform converts documents and web pages into audio, with mobile, web and browser-extension access.

Each winner received $5,000, approximately KSh 645,000, plus advertising credits. Both have been invited to present at Meta’s Regional AI Summit in Istanbul on 24 November.

Why it matters

The awards are small beside the sums usually attached to AI, but they point to practical uses being developed by local startups: supporting medical-image interpretation and making written material available as audio. The pitchathon also offers the winners visibility and a chance to reach industry contacts, alongside the cash.

That is support for early-stage products, not proof they are already widely used or delivering measurable results. The next test is whether the funding and exposure help the teams turn their ideas into services people can access and rely on.

Our read

A pitch competition is a beginning, not a victory lap. Still, these two projects address specific problems, and the funding comes with a useful next step: a chance to show the work to a wider regional audience. We’ll be watching for evidence of what happens after the applause and the advertising credits.

What to watch

  • Whether NeuralSight expands its reach among healthcare facilities.
  • Whether Me-Nasoma gains users who need audio access to written material.
  • What the startups present at Meta’s regional summit, and whether that leads to partnerships or wider deployment.

Discussion spark: For early-stage AI startups, which should matter more: modest funding, access to customers, or evidence that the product is already being used?
