A Reuters Institute survey finds that UK respondents are more negative about AI’s effect on news than people in eight other countries, even as chatbot use rises elsewhere. Only 12% across the nine countries said they were comfortable with news made entirely by AI.

What happened
The Reuters Institute’s 2026 report, published on 29 October, draws on YouGov polling of about 2,000 people in each of nine countries, conducted between 14 August and 28 September. Its account says weekly chatbot use reached 51% in the six countries tracked since 2024, up from 34% a year earlier.
The UK stands out in the findings: 42% reported weekly chatbot use, the lowest of the nine countries, and just 28% had noticed an AI tool on a news site or app in the previous week. Across all nine countries, only 12% were comfortable with fully AI-produced news; that rose to 19% when humans oversee production.
Why it matters
The figures point to a gap between using AI tools and wanting AI to make the news itself. For publishers, that distinction matters: readers may accept AI in search or behind the scenes while expecting clear human responsibility for journalism.
The survey also says 9% of respondents in the six-country trend group used AI specifically for news in the past week, up from 3% in 2024. That is growth, but it remains a minority habit, not a mandate to hand the newsroom keys to a chatbot.
Our read
The useful takeaway is not simply that Britain is cautious. It is that comfort depends on what AI is doing: using a chatbot to find information is a different proposition from asking it to produce the news. Publishers should explain where AI is involved and keep a human name attached to editorial responsibility.
What to watch
- Whether UK chatbot use catches up with the other countries surveyed.
- Whether comfort with AI-assisted, human-supervised news changes over time.
- How publishers explain AI’s role in reporting and production.
Discussion spark: Would clear disclosure and human oversight make you comfortable with AI-assisted news, or should news production remain entirely human-led?
