Simon Willison says he built Battle Drones, a browser-based real-time strategy game, through 12 iterations driven mainly by coding agents, including Claude Code. The project shows AI coding tools being used to make a playable game, not just produce a polished snippet for a demo.
Why it mattersBattle Drones includes 3D models, multiple maps and AI personalities. Its multiplayer mode synchronises game state between nearby devices using audio messages, an inventive bit of engineering that sounds better than shouting “your turn” across the room.
Discuss: Does a playable game built with coding agents show that these tools are opening software creation to more people, or is the real test whether they can maintain and improve a project over time?
