Benioff sees AI making business software feel less like an app

In The AI Economy

Salesforce chief executive Marc Benioff says AI could turn software interfaces into something that listens, adapts and proactively surfaces useful information. His vision puts Slack, which Salesforce owns, at the centre of a bigger question: will people still go to business apps, or will AI agents become the interface instead?

What happened

In an interview with Sources, Benioff said he expects today’s static screens to give way to software that feels “live or living”. He pointed to interfaces that could respond to context and suggest useful next steps, rather than waiting for people to navigate menus and ask the right question.

Benioff also said Salesforce bought Slack with business agents in mind, and argued that Slack’s role inside companies including OpenAI and Anthropic has vindicated the deal. He said Claude is now the default model in Slack, including Slackbot, through the companies’ Claudeforce partnership. Salesforce has invested more than $300 million in Anthropic across multiple rounds, he said, and he predicted the investment could be worth tens of billions in an Anthropic IPO.

Why it matters

This is a view from a company with a sizeable stake in where business AI goes next. If agents can retrieve information and carry out work across familiar services, the app itself may matter less than the assistant that sits across it. Slack’s position could become more valuable, or the interface could shift again around whoever controls the agent.

The business stakes are not abstract for Salesforce: Benioff linked Slack’s future to agents and described a substantial investment in one of the model companies now tied into its products. His remarks are a strategic argument, not proof that the new interface has arrived or that the investment will deliver the returns he expects.

Our read

The interesting bet is not simply that AI will add a chatbot to every screen. It is that software might anticipate what people need and reshape the screen around it. That could make work smoother, or leave people wondering which agent has moved their buttons this week.

Benioff has reasons to be bullish on Slack and Anthropic, so treat the forecast as an interested view. Still, the shift he describes is worth watching because it would change where people encounter business software, not just how they search it.

What to watch

  • Whether Salesforce demonstrates interfaces that adapt to context in everyday work.
  • How Claude and Slackbot handle tasks across business workflows.
  • Whether AI agents make Slack more central to work, or reduce the need to open it at all.
  • Whether Salesforce’s Anthropic investment and Benioff’s IPO prediction are borne out.

Discussion spark: If AI agents become the main way people use business software, should the agent or the underlying app control the interface and customer relationship?
