Perplexity says its Enterprise and API Platform has become the first cloud service to earn full FedRAMP 20x Class C certification, opening a route for US federal agencies to use live web search and source-cited answers in a certified environment. The milestone brings an AI search service into a government security-certification programme designed to move beyond paperwork-heavy reviews.
Perplexity Watch analysis
What happened
MeriTalk’s 5 November report says the certification covers Perplexity’s Enterprise and API Platform. It describes FedRAMP 20x Class C as a full certification, following a programme that had previously issued limited pilot certifications. The report says the assessment framework took 19 months to develop, with 26 companies receiving pilot certifications and nearly 100 entering the broader pipeline.
The report also says agencies can access Perplexity’s Enterprise Pro for Government platform for $0.25 per agency through 31 March 2027 under the GSA’s OneGov offer. That is the stated offer period and price, not a description of any additional purchasing terms.
Why it matters
Certification gives federal agencies a defined route to consider a service offering live web search and source-cited answers. That makes this more than another AI product badge: it could put those capabilities within reach of government users operating under specific cloud-security requirements.
The low introductory price is attention-grabbing, but the more consequential test is whether agencies adopt the service and how they use it. Certification establishes a route to procurement, not proof that every agency will deploy it or that the answers are suitable for every task.
Our read
A first full certification in a programme designed to change how cloud services are assessed is a meaningful step for Perplexity and for FedRAMP 20x. The useful distinction is between being cleared to compete for government use and becoming a routine tool inside agencies. The second part will take more than a remarkably small price tag.
What to watch
- Whether agencies begin using the certified Enterprise and API Platform.
- What security requirements and assessment results underpin the Class C certification.
- Whether the $0.25 offer leads to wider adoption before it ends on 31 March 2027.
Discussion spark: Should a low-cost, certified AI search service be adopted quickly by federal agencies, or should agencies first publish clear rules for which decisions it can support?
