Hola Darlings!

We started with a sprint list full of good intentions and lost the day to my broken elbow.

That is not a metaphor.

I wish it was.

There are days when building WittyWires feels heroic. You open the laptop, crack your knuckles, stare at the list, and think: lovely, today we become one of those organised adults who clear fifty line items before dinner and still have enough brain left to speak to another human.

Then Item One bites you in the arse!

Donny, Clawdius, and Max in the WittyWires shed staring down the cropped elbow that ate the sprint.
The sprint list had fifty things on it. The elbow chose violence.

The first job on the sprint list was supposed to be simple: review the little hero images on the forum-blog cards. Those cheerful transparent illustrations that sit beside topic titles, add a bit of character, and stop the place looking like a council PDF wearing a hoodie.

We had already done loads of work on them. Proper work. Rules refined. Style tightened. Crops tested. Hero cards polished until they looked less like generated confetti and more like something WittyWires had meant to do on purpose.

A quick job, said the lying goblin

Lovely.

Dangerous word, that.

The images were good. That was the trap.

Not broken. Not ugly. Not some emergency bin-fire with a missing face and seven fingers pointing at a suspicious kettle. They were almost there.

And almost there is where goblins rent office space.

I opened the first card and saw it.

An elbow.

Gone.

Not dramatically. Not enough that a dashboard would scream. Just the left edge of a transparent character cut a little too tight, like someone had shoved the poor thing into a box and closed the lid on its arm.

Max, the small bad-idea furnace in the back of my skull, immediately offered the sensible idiot option.

Nobody will notice.

The images load.

They look nice.

There are forty-nine other things on the list.

Max is very convincing when sleep, time, and common sense have all left the room in separate taxis.

But once you see a cropped elbow, you cannot unsee it. You start checking the next image. Then the next. Then the one after that. Suddenly it is not an elbow. It is a pattern. A hand too close to the edge. A shoulder losing its shape. A clean transparent cutout that should pop off the card instead looking like it has been sliced by a tiny guillotine operated by a design goblin with poor depth perception.

Cock.

The rule was not strict enough

Not the art direction. Not the idea. The rule.

We had been checking whether the images loaded. Whether they sat in the card. Whether they looked broadly right. Whether the title still had room to breathe. All useful checks. All green lights.

Green lights are not eyes.

The whole point of transparent character art is the illusion. The character should feel placed, deliberate, clean, alive. A little pop of personality in the corner of the card. Crop the left elbow and the spell breaks. It stops feeling like a sticker.

It starts feeling like a screenshot that got mugged by a rectangle.

And once the spell breaks, the card stops feeling designed and starts looking trapped.

A WittyWires visual QA scene showing the cropped-elbow problem becoming a proper no-left-crop rule.
There is a difference between an image loading and an image doing its job.

That matters.

WittyWires is not trying to be sterile. It is not trying to be another polite AI website full of glass panels, vague gradients, and copy written by a committee trapped in a lift. The small details are the point. If a card looks accidentally chopped, the whole surface whispers: nobody really looked.

And I had looked.

Unfortunately.

At that point Clawdius did the thing Clawdius does when the room changes temperature. He did not argue. He did not sulk.

Technically valid is sometimes just wrong with a certificate.

He knows a file can be correct, present, and still visually lying through its shiny little teeth.

He went quiet in the useful way.

The left side is sacred.

No cropped elbows. No chopped hands. No cut-off silhouettes. Ever.

If the image needs to be wider, fine. Make it wider. Let it breathe. If something has to disappear into the hero card for composition, let it tuck away on the right, where the eye can forgive it.

The entrance does not get amputated

Expected jobOne quick visual pass
Actual monsterTwenty-nine elbows and one very stupid victory
New lawThe left side is sacred

Twenty-nine elbows later

Not nudged. Not patched with a hopeful little stylesheet prayer. Rebuilt. Reprocessed. Replaced. The whole mapped set of twenty-nine forum-blog hero images had to go through the new law, because this was not one naughty elbow. It was a system-level crop goblin, and system-level crop goblins do not respond to stern looks.

We may be idiots, but we are not enthusiastic idiots without a rollback rope.

Then came the glamorous part of modern creative work: waiting for image generation, checking transparent edges, measuring padding, making contact sheets, uploading replacements, verifying that every image was actually the new one, then opening the original offenders again like a sleep-deprived art examiner with a grudge.

Twenty-nine rebuilt. Twenty-nine replaced. Twenty-nine checked.

All very comforting.

Still not enough.

Because numbers do not spot the thing that makes your stomach go, no, that is off.

Human eyes had to bless it.

So I clicked back through the seven that started the whole mess. The ones with the arms, elbows, hands, and left edges that had committed tiny acts of visual vandalism.

One by one, they passed.

Yes.

Good after another look.

Excellent.

Nice.

Great.

Works.

Ace.

By then it was 01:31 the next day

The first item on the sprint list was finally done.

The other forty-nine were still sitting there with the smug patience of unpaid parking tickets.

A bruised WittyWires victory scene where the elbow is safe but the sprint list is still glaring.
The elbows survived. The sprint list is still being weird about it.

This is the stupid part of quality work nobody puts in the launch thread. The win does not always look like shipping a giant feature. Sometimes the win is saving a left elbow from the invisible mouth of a crop box. Sometimes the adult move is spending far too long on a thing most people would nearly miss, because nearly missing it is exactly how lazy surfaces are born.

Do it once. Do it properly. Or spend all day rediscovering why shortcuts are bastards.

That was the lesson.

The cards now pop the way they were supposed to. The characters sit cleanly. The left silhouettes survive. The hero images feel intentional again, not trapped.

Was it worth an entire day?

Max says no, obviously. Max is currently lying under the sprint list whispering that elbows are optional and sandwiches are real.

But Max is not in charge.

Mostly.

The elbows are safe now.

The sprint list is still glaring at me.

And WittyWires looks just that little bit more like someone gave a damn.

Which, annoyingly, is the whole bloody point.
