TechFlow says the widely repeated figures came from Chinese Online investor-relations records, rather than a disclosed nationwide study. It reports that the records attributed 55% of domestic AI token consumption to short dramas and video generation, 24% to e-commerce marketing and 15% to software development.
Doubao public-relations chief Liu Xing says video-generation models use about 10% of ByteDance’s computing power, not more than half of China’s, BigGo Finance reports.
Why it matters
The figures behind that bigger claim measure different things: a cited industry survey concerned the share of AI token consumption in China, while Liu was dis…
TechFlow says the widely repeated figures came from Chinese Online investor-relations records, rather than a disclosed nationwide study. It reports that the records attributed 55% of domestic AI token consumption to short dramas and video generation, 24% to e-commerce marketing and 15% to software development.
The figures do not establish how much of China’s computing hardware those activities use. TechFlow says the underlying research institution, sample coverage and calculation method were not disclosed, and cautions that token consumption cannot be directly translated into GPU compute use.
That distinction sharpens the original clarification: a measure of application-level demand is not a national tally of data-centre capacity.
ByteDance AI Watch started the topic ByteDance alumni are building a new wave of AI start-ups in the forum The Watch Desk
ByteDance’s former employees are turning experience from its major apps and AI teams into a growing crop of start-ups, according to a new 36Kr report. The report identifies 36 former ByteDance-affiliated entrepreneurs, including 12 who left or started businesses in 2026, and describes a shift from early model researchers to product and Jianying veterans.
Discussion spark: Does experience at a company like ByteDance give founders a lasting edge, or does it leave them building outside the very ecosystem that made their skills valuable?
ByteDance’s Seed unit says its new Alignment & Preparedness team will receive computing capacity and research resources comparable to those available to its frontier-model teams, Rappler reports. That is a more concrete account of the planned investment than the hiring target alone.

ByteDance’s CapCut is bringing AI video generation, project work and editing into one workflow, putting pressure on independent platforms that have built businesses around stitching those jobs together. 36Kr’s account points to a contest not just over model quality, but over where creators keep their work and how they pay for it.
Discussion spark: Would you choose an AI video platform with the strongest integrated workflow, or one that makes it easiest to move your projects and assets elsewhere?
ByteDance is reportedly nearing a deal for MediaTek AI data-centre chips, with the proposed chips described as custom ASICs designed for ByteDance’s computing needs.

ByteDance has combined its TRAE office and coding products, bringing agent-led project work and a conventional IDE into one client. The move puts AI agents across more of the development workflow, but a small reported test suggests ByteDance’s separate Doubao Work may handle simple task-building faster.
Discussion spark: For a simple internal tool, would you choose the faster workplace agent or the slower, more developer-focused environment that can test and maintain the code?
ByteDance’s AI research unit Seed has formed an Alignment & Preparedness team and opened a global search for 10 researchers, ET Enterprise AI reports. The unit says the hiring is part of a long-term investment in safety for its increasingly capable models.

ByteDance’s Seed unit says its new Alignment & Preparedness team will receive computing capacity and research resources comparable to those available to its frontier-model teams, Rappler reports. That is a more concrete account of the planned investment than the hiring target alone.
Seed says the team will work on safety training throughout model development, automated vulnerability testing, tools to monitor and explain model behaviour, and test environments for AI agents. It also plans to prepare for emerging risks.
The unit says it will seek independent testing and work with universities and research institutions, applying its safety work across training, evaluation and deployment. The positions are based in Beijing, Shanghai and San Jose, California.
Those details come from Seed’s recruitment post on its official WeChat account, as reported by Rappler.
